Another adventure this weekend with my Amy. We went to the roller derby! It was so awesome and super fun!
From the moment we walked in, we were in awe. The arena was packed, pink, and perfect! The energy was so live, and the crowd was already cheering the LA Ri-ettes on, as they had a lead by 30 points at that time. In the center of the rink, a crystal disco ball, shaped like a roller skate. A-friggin-dorable!
We walk up some stairs to get a good view of the rink, and begin to cheer along. This lady in front of me keeps looking back at me, and I’m thinking to myself “hi!” Finally she speaks up, and asks if I’m a skater. OMG no! Come to find out she’s a skater in San Diego, and told us you get obsessed with it easily. She encouraged me to do the boot camp and join. Uh, no. Me on roller skates, I am not coordinated! I fear falling hard and losing fingers. So dramatic, I know.
We joke about joining, and tried to figure out why she thought I was a skater. That’s when I notice a reserved sign in front of us. We were standing in the area designated for skaters! We blended in - ha! Of course, now all we can think about is joining and our skater names. Amy has a grr’eat name for herself. Me? I could only think of Sue Namee (like tsunami). LOL - our favorite players names were Gori Spelling and Laguna Beyotch. The best!
Just beside the arena was a flat rink (for beginners), with clothing and food vendors and a stage. At half time, a rock band performed, and people started dancing in circles. Hippies! Outside there were food trucks and even a Hot Dog on a Stick stand. Amy had her first corn dog from this LA staple, and I tried the sesame chicken bowl from Truck Norris. Yes, I had to try just based off the name - ha! I’ll just say we both enjoyed our food, a lot!
Long story short, the LA Ri-ettes lost - by 29! Of course we still cannot fully explain the rules and how points are earned, but we learned a little. Lots of laughs and interesting people.
